Northern Limited Show 2017 Critique

Firstly I would like to say it was an honour for the invitation to judge at this superbly run show. Many thanks to the organisers and my super efficient steward Peter plus the exhibitors for such a wonderful entry, and making it a fun, friendly experience.

I found no light eyes and mainly powerful, wide back ends – so important in my opinion. However there were a few dogs with rather too much condition – they must make exceedingly good pies in Scotland!

PUPPY DOG (0)

NOVICE DOG (2) (1)

1. HARTE’S ARDNEISH POET
Masculine hound with a nice head, dark eye and small ears. Good neck and front angulation with depth and nicely angled pasterns. Feet could be better. Good spring of rib with plenty of width behind. Enjoying his day out but moved well at times.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (4) (1)

1. HARTE’S ARDNEISH POET

2. FREEMAN’S LILAC WIND MONTGOMERY CLIFT TO GLOOSCAP (IMP FRA)
Larger hound with plenty of bone, nice head and powerful neck. Not as good in front but good pasterns. Nice topline and fallaway. Well off for width behind with good bend of stifle. Moved well.

3. SEAMAN’S ARRACHOGAIDH BHAIDENACH

POST GRADUATE DOG (5) (1)

1. SHARP’S KILLOETER SKYE (BD, RBIS, BOS)
Powerful boy with a handsome head, strong neck with good length. Very nice front conformation, flat straight bone and tight feet. Good depth, adequate spring of rib and good topline leading into lovely rear quarters with low hocks. Moved very well, with reach and drive, however flagged a bit in the final challenge.

2. HEAP’S LEOCH JAMIE OF FINTALLOCH
Nice dog with good head, well set on ears and a dark eye. Not the front of my winner which showed when on the move. Lovely spring of rib and depth of chest but would prefer a better bend of stifle.

3. DONALDSON’S EILEANIRGH KING WHISPERER

OPEN DOG (6) (2)

1. CARTMELL’S CUSIDH DRAWING DOWN THE SUN (RBD)
Shapely dog but not always overly enthusiastic on the move. Nice head but would prefer better set on ears. Strong neck into well laid shoulder. Feet rather flat. Nice topline and spring of rib with good width behind.

2. McCOMBE’S  TEVIOTDALE BANNER BLUE
Larger more powerful dog. Well off for bone. Good head, strong neck into good shoulder. Very nice depth and spring of rib but flattening in topline at times. Plenty of width in quarters and low hocks. Moved well.

3. SHARP’S ROSSLYN QONNOR

VETERAN DOG (2)

1. WRIGHT’S HEARTHSTANE GLEN GARRIOCH (BVIS)
Substantial and very happy 10.5 year old. Soft expression with good neck, shoulder and upper arm. A tad short in leg but tight feet. Lovely width throughout with good bend of stifle and low hocks. Moved with great enthusiasm for one “so young” covering a lot of ground with ease.

2 CARTMELL’S CUSIDH HOMCOMING
Not as much substance as my winner and less balanced. Nice head, dark eye, well set small black ears. Strong neck into good shoulder and spring of rib. Pleasing bend of stifle and width of thigh. Another hound that strode out – well done the oldies.

PUPPY BITCH (5) (3)

1. RANDALL’S KALEGINY REIVER (BPB, BPIS)
Very well off for bone, shapely 6 month old. Dark eye and well set on ears that are rather flat and long. Powerful neck into well laid shoulders. Good depth of chest for age with nice spring. Well held topline with nice fallaway and bend of stifle. A very enthusiastic mover.

2. HARTE’S NIXOPHEL CRYSTAL CELESTE
Finer bitch throughtout. Dark eye, well set on ear. Again shapely with good depth and topline. Moved enthusiastically but just needs more time.

NOVICE BITCH (4) (0)

1. NUTTALL’S LUCKHURST PANI (RBB)
Curvaceous bitch with lovely head and ears. Nicely put together with good pasterns and excellent forechest, having width throughout and good bend of stifle. Well balanced, enabling her to move easily and true, keeping a better topline than my second.

2. ROBERTSON’S CHUILIN LOREDANA
Classic head but ears not as well set on. Pleasing front confirmation with depth and good width behind – not as good in stifle. Moved well. Close decision.

3. RANDALL’S KALEGINY REIVER

SPECIAL BEGINNERS BITCH (7) (2)

1. NUTTALL’S LUCKHURST PANI

2. NUTTALL’S ERPINGHAM TITANIA
Similar type of bitch to my winner. Shapely and well conformed throughout. Very good stifle and pasterns with nice depth and spring of rib. Moved effortlessly – another close decision.

3. MONTEITH’S ARDNEISH PADRAIGIN

POST GRADUATE BITCH (6) (3)

1. HEAP’S LEOCH JUNIPER OF FINTALLOCH (BB, BIS)
Dark bitch with a classic head and expression and lovely ears. Strong neck and excellent forechest. Good topline and spring of rib with width in quarters. Adequate bend of stifle but was balanced, sound and moved true covering the ground with ease.

2. MONTEITH’S ARDNEISH PADRAIGIN
Obviously not as mature as my winner but a nice bitch with good coat. Nice width throughout and low hocks. Moved well if a bit close behind at times.

3. LINDSAYS’S CELTICMOON SHADOW MAGIC AT SILVERTHYME

OPEN BITCH (7) (4)

1. HEAP’S LEOCH JUNIPER OF FINTALLOCH

2. SWANSON’S – COTHERSTONE BROGUE OF ALTIMARLACH
More substantial bitch with a nice head but prefer better set on of ear. Good neck into well laid shoulder with plenty of depth and spring of rib. Lovely back end – strong and powerful. Moved well but toeing out and flattening a little.

3. CARTMELL’S BRYLACH OVER THE BROOMSTICK WITH CUSIDH

VETERAN BITCH (7) (4)

1. SMART’S KESSOCH MARSCO OF GREYSTIEL
Shapely bitch with attactive head and good ears. Feet and pasterns could be better, but good shoulder and strong neck with depth of chest and well put together rear end. Like all the “oldies” moved very well.

2. ROBERTSON’S CHUILIN CAMELLIA
Close up between 1 and 2.What a very happy girl – pretty head with dark eye. Well angulated fore and aft. Again feet could be better. Enjoying herself on the move.

3. SEAMAN’S BREESFALT ISABELLA TO ARRACHOGAIDH
